PROJECTS SEVEN is a collection of many articles and series from The Home Shop Machinist primarily from 1994 through 1996. However, this volume is unique among those Projects books published. We have included the very excellent columns of Roland Friestad, titled "Computers in the Shop."

Roland began his column when, for most of us hobby machinists, the computer was something seemingly unrelated to machining except for industrial applications. Today, we are finding many uses for the computer closer to home that can simplify some otherwise arduous, less exciting tasks, and better yet, increase accuracy in the more ticklish areas of machining. The reader response to Roland's articles on conversion of your mill or mill-drill to CNC has been good over the years, but what surprises me most is how many people are calling and writing us to see if they can get those articles six years after the series finished. Thus, we have decided to include them in their entirety in Projects Seven.

But the book is not just about computers in the shop, as you will soon see. It includes some superb work by many other authors/ machinists who have offered us a wonderful variety of techniques and projects that should keep anyone busy for a long time. Even if you choose not to do all the projects, this book will be helpful. When we listen to the wisdom and experience of our peers, we're bound to learn and ultimately apply some of that to our own work. Applying it may come in the form of emulation - doing it their way - or it may be the springboard for synthesis, their ideas blended with your own creativity to form an altogether new approach to a problem or puzzle. Either way, I hope Projects Seven will present you with the gifts these authors have offered.

Finally, I wish to again thank each author who appears in this book. Their unselfish efforts are appreciated so very much. And I hope you, the reader, enjoy Projects Seven.
