PROJECTS TWO is the second book to come from The Home Shop Machinist. Like Projects One, it is an edited compilation of most (but not all) articles published in the magazine during the years 1984 and 1985. The magazine's back issues are long gone, due to the rapid increase in circulation that was experienced during those years. We are happy that you have the opportunity to enjoy those articles now, especially if this is the first time you've ever seen them.

If you have Projects One, you will undoubtedly become aware left away of the maturity of the material in this book compared to the first two years (1982-83).

The first year, especially, was made up primarily of shop articles taken from Live Steam magazine files — not that doing that makes them less mature; they're simply a little more limited in scope because they are specific to the model engineering hobby. By 1984, our files for The Home Shop Machinist were beginning to bulge with fine articles for the machinist who might not be a model engineer at all.

Some articles high on the all-time popularity list appeared in the years 1984 and 85. Certainly Harry Bloom's "Reconditioning a Lathe" ranks at the top of all the "Techniques" articles we ever published. And also in these years, today's very familiar, and popular names began showing up with regularity, such as Rudy Kouhoupt, Philip Duclos, Guy Lautard, J. O. Barbour, Jr., William F. Green, and John Dean. Not only are these people consumate craftsmen, they are also prolific writers. They - and quite obviously all the others - derive considerable pleasure from sharing their skills and knowledge (shop wisdom) with everyone, and I consider that to be a most noble calling.

Again, as with our first book, I hope Projects Two gives you many hours of pleasure both in your easy chair and in your shop!
