It started off innocently enough, when someone suggested we create a book of tips, based on items posted on The Home Shop Machinist and Machinist's Workshop online message board. The support was overwhelming, as other members enthusiastically stated their desire to see such a book.

Seeing this terrific response, the book was approved, and the process of gathering tips was ready to be undertaken. When I got the assignment, I was nervous. This was, after all, my first big project. Probably the biggest, single most important project I had in my lifetime. This book could be my future! But, as a wise man once said, nervousness and excitement are basically the same emotion.

I began compiling the tips around the middle of May 2004, and as I sit writing this, in August 2004, I've come to realize just how much this clan of machinists has grown on me. I enjoyed the time that I spent putting this book together, as well as the contact I had with this great group of guys. The topic wasn't always machining, but you always managed to learn something. I genuinely looked forward to coming to work in the morning and checking the boards, searching for tips, but also taking in plenty of the off-topic (and sometimes off-color) humor.

I couldn't possibly give enough thanks to the book's contributors, but I'll still do it one more time: Thank you. The grand total is twenty-nine contributors from four different countries (America, Canada, Great Britain, and Scotland).

So here it is, The Home Shop Readers' Tip Book, written for home shop machinists from home shop machinists. I hope you will enjoy, and be able to glean as much information as you can. Many of these tips are simple, and well worth the effort. For those of you who have not visited our website and our message boards, you are encouraged to so. You'll never meet a more helpful group of machinists than you will find here. Don't be shy. Contribute any of your tips on the message board as well!
