PROJECTS ONE is the very first book to come from The Home Shop Machinist. It is an edited compilation of most (but not all) articles published in the magazine during the years 1982 and 1983, the first two years of publication. Those issues have long since gone out of circulation. There are many excellent articles included here that have been missed by those who discovered The Home Shop Machinist later on.

As some of you know, The Home Shop Machinist was a "spin-off" from Live Steam magazine. There were dozens of fine metalworking/machining articles in the Live Steam files that were begging to be published. In that Live Steam is a hobby magazine directed to scale model steam engine construction and related subjects, there has been severely limited space for more than a mere handful of machining articles. We began to realize that there were no other magazines targeting the hobby metalworker, and the concept of The Home Shop Machininst was born some Six months after our publisher's go-ahead. Though the articles in the early issues were written by "live steamers," they are not limited in their application to the live steam hobby. They are useful to nearly everyone who uses machine tools.

The contents of this book fall quite conveniently into general categories. The "Techniques" section is loaded with a veritable kaleidoscope of ideas covering a wide range of subjects that are bound to give you inspiration. The "Lathe and Drill Press Accessories" sections are self-explanatory, as is "Shop Tools &. Improvements." In them, I feel certain you will find several projects that will help you upgrade your shop and your machine tools. Finally, just for fun, we have included three "Hobby Projects" that may challenge your skills, and offer you more opportunities to "make chips." After all, for most of us, that, as they say, is "where it's at!"
