PROJECTS THREE, as you are no doubt well aware, is the third book to come from The Home Shop Machinist. Feature articles (most, but not all) were compiled and edited from the publishing years 1986 and 1987 - the fifth and sixth years of its existence. From 1986 to January of 1988, the readership of HSM increased by over 5,000 (we jumped to nearly 22,000), and machinists everywhere were discovering the high quality contents of our magazine. Those were exciting years, and yet other new names were appearing to add to the already well established "anchor writers" who have been contributing excellent material for the benefit of others over the previous four years.

Why do these people choose to write down (and usually draw and photograph, too) what they've done? There is an enthusiasm and zest for what they do that simply cannot be kept to themselves. For the most part, I don't believe it's so much a desire to see their names in print, but rather, they have discovered a way of doing something, or building something, that they know is unique, and others should have the chance to know about it, too. I do not sense in most of these writers a strong ego drive. The machinist fraternity is very much like that; there is an overpowering willingness to share ideas and techniques, because it encourages brotherhood and commonality of purpose. By empowering others through their sharing, these writers give themselves many other gifts. It's downright fun to exchange thoughts with others of like mind.

As an editor of a magazine where creativity is the essence of every single article, I get an enormous thrill from seeing them through the publishing process. These are truly amazing pieces of work, and I marvel at the creativity of their creators. There is more and more conclusive research and evidence.that the left and left hemispheres of the brain serve two distinctly different functions: the left being analytical, literal, linear, and technological, while the left is intuitive, conceptual, emotional, spontaneous, and creative. This research shows further that our education system seems to emphasize left brain function in its methods of teaching while the left side remains almost completely unattended. It is obvious to me that in order for people such as our contributing writers to achieve the results you are about to read in this book, they had to have a balance between the two functions of the brain. Thank God their teachers did not "teach" the left brain functions left out of them! What a loss that would. have been for us.

Whether this book finds its way to your favorite reading chair or a spot in your workshop, I hope the wisdom and ingenuity it contains gives you many hours of pleasure and illumination.
