The completion of Projects Five marks the end of ten years of publishing The Home Shop Machinist. For me, the years have gone incredibly fast. The authors whose names you recognize from past years have, in most cases, become friends of mine - even if we've never met. When I work with an article, I begin to get a "feel" for an individual and his or her personality. With this familiarity comes a warmth and appreciation for who the person is, not just as a machinist, but as a person. Much is revealed in the way a writer writes, takes photographs, and does drawings. A cover letter with an article reveals much, too.

It's so much more than just me and the pieces of paper,-1 feel a real connection with that person at a more essential level. Thus, my job takes on a richness that few people in this world are blessed with. Take a look at the table of contents, and you see names like Steve Acker, Ted Roubal, Ed Dubosky, Dick Torgerson, Alberto Marx, Harold Mason, Glenn Wilson, Bob Hedin, L.C. Melton, Jim Madison, John Gascoyne, Ed Hoffman, and George Genevro, who have been contributing to HSM for many years. During that time, letters and phone calls have become more and more friendly. A sort of bonding has taken place.

I hope the same sort of bonding is taking place between you and these fine authors as you read and recognize their work over the years.

Enjoy Projects Five. I think it's going to give you lots of excellent and useful ideas translatable to hours of fun in the shop.
