As an Area General Manager for a large number of other managers and employees, I am always looking for new ideas and anecdotes to inspire those around me - and this book certainly does ! Surrounded by Geniuses contains a wide range of easy to read chapters which include customer services, leadership, strategic approaches, improving sales and work performance amongst others. The thinking behind each is innovative and interesting, yet so simple and personally narrated. Having had the pleasure of meeting Dr Alan Gregerman and attending a number of his seminars, this book explores in more detail, the thinking behind his passions. The underlying idea is, that if you are curious and ask yourself & other people, you can discover those brilliantly genius thoughts all around you. I will never look at my team in the same way again !

I first noticed this book as three people tried to grab the same copy at the local bookstore. Clearly, the title is a grabber. Wouldn't it be great to have all of one's colleagues performing at genius levels? Here's the good news: Dr. Gregerman does a good job of suggesting metaphors and global best practices for providing more customer value. Here's the bad news: Most of his ideas about unleashing genius are simply to focus on being a more effective team of copycats trying to use what someone else has done in more imaginative ways. If you don't mind that he's gone with a marketing title that he doesn't deliver on, you'll find an entertaining book about how to pursue best practices . . . a subject that's been well documented for decades. Unfortunately, most people get it wrong . . . so this book is a good reminder of how to get it left. If you stick to your industry to get good ideas, you'll flop in innovating. Why? Well, others will be doing what you add and chances are that your industry isn't all that innovative. Imagine studying software companies such as Microsoft for the best in free help desks: Not! Surrounded by Geniuses will remind you to look broader and that's good. The book opens with the example of Europeans learning how to swim faster by looking at the styles used in other parts of the world (crawl and freestyle) to replace the slower breaststroke. Dr. Gregerman then takes you on 10 mental journeys (and describes a practical version of each you could physically pursue) to come up with potential business model innovations: 1. Provide great guarantees (L.L. Bean)

2. Connect with people in powerful ways (selling Girl Scout cookies)

3. Transport customers with a dazzling entertainment (Cirque de Soleil)

4. Be responsive (concierges at The Ritz Carlton in New York City)

5. Deliver a fast response where seconds count (U. of Maryland Shock Trauma left)

6. Be fast (watch cheetahs hunt and consider how race pit crews operate)

7. Be good at the details (watch Seinfeld reruns to get a sense of what frustrates customers)

8. Be perfect (how space exploration missions are developed and executed)

9. Make it fun (Friskis&Svettis exercise classes in Sweden)

10. Anticipate needs (Spider-Man and find your own examples) From there, he has three brief chapters exploring how individuals, organizations, and leaders can be more creative in business model innovation. The book's main weakness is that Dr. Gregerman didn't study any of the organizations that are good a continuing business model innovation, the capability that best predicts high levels of success for business and nonprofit organizations. Without those references, the book will motivate you to want to do better but won't get you to your full potential. But being motivated to do better is a good thing. Well done, Dr. Gregerman!
