This book is a collection of functionally translated abstracts from recent [circa 1994] Chinese medical journals. They are functional translations because we have not translated them word for word. Rather, we have only translated what we felt was most important, clinically useful information for busy practitioners.

Over the last decade, Blue Poppy Press has tried to publish representatives of every major genre of Chinese medicine literature. However, the Chinese medical journal literature is largely unknown to Western practitioners who cannot read medical Chinese. Every one or two months, approximately 40 such journals are published in the Republic of China by TCH colleges, presses, and research associations, by acupuncture/moxibustion associations, and by qi gong associations. Each journal typically contains several dozen articles on a wide variety of subjects.

Journal articles such as these record the actual implementation of specific treatment protocols and their outcomes. Thus, unlike treatments given in TCM textbooks, practitioners can assess how likely it is that a treatment will achieve a certain result based on past experience. In addition, these outcomes can be used when lobbying various governmental agencies, talking to potential patients, and speaking to the press. Further, these protocols are the most up to date in the TCM Literature. They are the cutting edge of Chinese clinical practice.

This book is divided into several sections, similar to many modern Chinese TCM journals. There are sections on internal medicine (nei ke), gynecology (fu ke), pediatrics (er ke), dermatology (pi fu ke), urology & male sexual dysfunction (nau ke), traumatology & orthopedics (shang gu ke), and acupuncture/moxibustion & medical massage (shen jui/tuina). We hope that practitioners will finds this book a useful addition to their references help and an inspiration to pursue their own study of the Chinese medical journal literature.
