More Der schwere Zugkraftwagen 18t Sd.Kfz.9 FAMO (Waffen-Arsenal Sp-36) By Walter E. Seifert Als 1890 die Stockton Wheel Company in Kalifornien (USA) den ersten Kettenschlepper für die Landwirtschaft auf den Markt brachte, war das gleichzeitig der Urahn der militärisch genutzten Halbkettenfahrzeuge. Das Prinzip, die Hinterräder durch eine angetriebene Kette zu ersetzen und über die Vorderräder zu lenken, brachte für die Fahrt im Gelände viele Vorteile. Sehr schnell nutzten die amerikanischen Streitkräfte dieses Prinzip für ein Zugmittel bei der schweren Artillerie. Nach verschiedenen Versuchen in Deutschland wurde die Idee zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges wieder aufgegriffen. Mit solchen Zugfahrzeugen sollte die Artillerie unabhängig vom Gelände werden. Es entstand allerdings keine ausgereifte Lösung. Die bis Kriegsende gefertigten Prototypen und Versuchsserien wurden 1919 komplett verschrottet. Trotz dieses unzureichenden Ergebnisses brachte der Erste Weltkrieg den Durchbruch für Kraftfahrzeuge als militärische Zugmittel. Erst ab 1930 wurde wieder ernsthaft an der Entwicklung von Zugmaschinen mit Halbketten-Laufwerken gearbeitet. Die Firma Krauss-Maffei erhielt vom Heereswaffenamt den Auftrag zur Entwicklung eines Schleppers. Zuerst wurde der handelsübliche ZW 10 mit einem absenkbaren hinteren Laufwerk versehen. Bereits im gleichen Jahr erschien ein Nachfolger, der MSZ 201. Von diesem Fahrzeug mit verbessertem Laufwerk und veränderter Achsaufhängung beschaffte die Reichswehr 25 Stück. Das Waffenprüfamt führte damit Versuche auf einem eigens dafür geschaffenen Prüfstand durch. Ziel war es, ein neuartiges Gleiskettenlaufwerk und ein Lenksystem zu entwickeln, das eine Kombination aus konventioneller Lenkung und Lenkgetriebe war. Anfang 1939 erschienen die ersten Prototypen bei Krauss-Maffei.
