The contributors to Daughtering and Mothering discuss the mother-daughter relationship which represents in all its complexity the diversity of women's relationships, focusing on the active role taken by women as daughters. Working from the perspectives of psychoanalysis, psychology and cultural anthropology, the contributors first critique the sexual dimension of female subjectivity--the notion that the father is necessarily the first sexual object. They also examine women's roles in therapy, management and education, as well as in external relations. Finally, they argue that the concept of ``good-enough-mothering'' is an idealized version of the mother-daughter relationship, and one which only fosters existing patterns of dominance by class, race or culture.
