More Wagram - 1809 : L'apogée de l'Empire By François-Guy Hourtoulle La bataille de Wagram qui se solde par une victoire indiscutable n'a pas eu le retentissement que l'on pouvait attendre et pourtant elle demeure la plus belle démonstration du génie de Napoléon, son apogée en tant que chef de guerre. On peut penser ce que l'on veut de l'Empereur, l'aimer ou le détester mais il faut reconnaître les faits et les replacer dans le contexte de leur époque. A Wagram, nous rencontrons de multiples preuves concernant le génie de Napoléon dans deux domaines très précis : l'organisation de ses armées et le sens de la stratégie. Dans cette grande bataille, on a l'impression d'assister à la démonstration d'un maître de l'art manipulant ses 200 000 hommes comme il déplacerait les pièces d'un jeu d'échec, toujours en avance de plusieurs coups sur son adversaire, pourtant excellent. C'est peut-être l'importance - et la valeur qu'on leur accorde traditionnellement - des ordres de Napoléon adressés à ses corps d'armée ou à ses divisions qui éclipse les actions des régiments et, à plus forte raison, celles des hommes. Les actes d'héroïsme seront un peu noyés dans la masse des combats contrairement au terrible affrontement d'Essling. En définitive, Wagram manque de ce souffle épique si cher aux Français. La bataille est trop classique, mieux, trop académique. Dans notre pays, il semble exister chez beaucoup d'amateurs d'histoire une attirance morbide pour les récits de nos défaites les plus dramatiques. Que de livres ont été écrits sur Waterloo, la retraite de Russie ou aujourd'hui sur juin 1940, puis sur Dien Bien Phu. Les Français adorent l'héroïsme dans la défaite. C'est sans doute pourquoi je tenterai, une fois encore, de réhabiliter la victoire. La victoire d'un homme qui brassait " l'Epopée ".
