History/Military US Destroyers in Action, vol. 3

More US Destroyers in Action, vol. 3 By Al Adcock The destroyer has been identified for the last 100 years as the protector of the fleet, screening the battleships, cruisers, and aircraft carriers from harm. Their role was expanded in the Atlantic and Pacific during World War Two to include hunting submarines, radar picket duty, anti-aircraft protection and escorting convoys. The London Naval Conference of 1930 specified tonnage and the number of warships that could be constructed per year. It limited destroyer forces to a total of 150,000 tons1 in commission and limited new construction to 1500 tons (1524 mt), although 16 percent of the total could be 1850 tons (1880 mt). After this treaty was signed, the US Navy was obliged to scrap 93 of the earlier 1000 ton (1016 mt) 'flush deck, four pipe* destroyers. The US had over 300 destroyers in commission following the First World War - the largest destroyer force of any navy. In fact, the US Navy had more destroyers than available personnel for these vessels. The flush deck destroyers were converted into Destroyer Minelayers (DM) and Destroyer Minesweepers (DMS) to take advantage of available hulls. Six of the flush deckers were converted to High Speed Transports (APD) between 1938 and 1940. This conversion total increased to 36 ships by 1943 and these served during the island Hopping' campaign in the Pacific.
