Since 1982, Rudy Kouhoupt has been a workhorse in the "stable" of contributing editors and authors for both Live Steam and The Home Shop Machinist. During the past seven years (this being 1989), Rudy has produced such a volume of work of the highest quality that we felt justified in producing a book of his efforts - that which you hold in your hands.

And what a volume of work! Those of you who read only Live Steam know well the magnificent model engines he has designed and built, but may never have been introduced to the amazing and thoughtful material he has produced for the machinist using a very small tabletop lathe or mill, giving him or her a remarkable array of accessories and other useful tools to make. His articles on techniques and other shop information have always been carefully thought through and proven in his own work.

Those of you who read only The Home Shop Machinist might never know of the marvelous and beautiful stationary steam engine projects that Rudy has brought to the hobby over the years. Not only are they aesthetically attractive, they function efficiently as well. Countless modelers have built his engines without anything but praise following their completion. Even more startling, perhaps, is the fact that he has produced these marvels on a tiny Unimat or a Perris lathe and equally tiny vertical mill. Rudy's shop happens to be housed in a room the size of a large closet - about 5x5 feet!

From an editor's standpoint, he is a dream come true; his text requires virtually no changes, his photos are always superb, and his drawings are impeccable. His type is rare among authors.

Therefore, I take great pleasure in introducing you to the multidimensional, multi-talented Rudy Kouhoupt. It is most appropriate that our first book in the new "Shop Wisdom" series would feature him. As you'll soon discover, his shop wisdom is far-reaching and profound. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
