The first three volumes of The Shop Wisdom of Rudy Kouhoupt have been grandly accepted by the hobby machining fraternity for over fifteen years. Literally thousands of hobbyists have benefited from the information put forth by the author. An unknown number of hobbyists will continue to learn from those pages. Owners of Volumes One, Two, or Three will quickly determine this volume is different. In September of 2004, Rudy drove from his home in Bridgewater, New Jersey, to our facility in Traverse City, Michigan. The visit was his first to Village Press and it was a splendid experience to have him tour our plant. Everyone in the building was familiar with the name Rudy Kouhoupt as they had seen it on so many pages and book covers. To meet him in person was exciting for the employees... and for Rudy.

During his visit, many new ideas and developments were discussed and new plans laid out. The book you are holding is, in part, based upon one of those ideas. Rudy had proposed a new approach for the presentation of projects in the form of a "chapbook," the format in which this volume is printed. The smaller and more easily digested approach, along with the lay-flat binding, was intended to facilitate the use of the book in the machine shop. With the newly formulated approach, Rudy left for home with ideas for a dozen such volumes, all focusing on the advancement of the home shop machinist. And, evidence lay on his drafting board that he had indeed begun.

The steam hobbyists and the machining hobbyists had an enormous mentor, benefactor and instructor wrapped within one individual, one I admired greatly. Rudy's work in this world is done, but his accomplishments live on in these pages and his spirit within the lives of those he touched.

That said, presented in this volume -in the chapbook format - are the last projects from Rudy's column, "The Micro Machinist."
