More The Nature of Theoretical Thinking in Nursing: Second Edition By Hesook Kim The new edition of this important work on the construction of nursing theory reflects the tremendous growth in nursing theory in the past 15 years. As before, the book provides conceptual tools for understanding the world of nursing in theoretical terms. It grapples with the question: Why is nursing concerned with theroy? The purpose of the book is to understand how conceptualizations and theoretical statements are developed and refined in nursing. Coverage includes basic terminology in theoretical thinking, principles of conceptual analysis, presentation of conceptual domains in nursing, and a systematic framework for theoretical analysis. Graduate students will find this a core resource. Annotation The book contains black-and-white illustrations. Mary Ellen Wurzbach In this second edition the editor describes and develops four conceptual domains of nursing: client, client-nurse, practice, and environment. These four domains are used as a framework for theoretical analysis in nursing. The editor indicates several purposes. The first goal is to provide conceptual tools that can delineate the world of nursing in theoretical terms. She proposes a systematic framework that can be used to examine the field of nursing, positing important concepts in an orderly system. Her primary aim is to offer a typology of conceptual domains that can delineate nursing's essential theoretical concepts. The author's objectives are worthy and she meets them in an exemplary way. The text is designed for graduate students struggling with conceptualization and theoretical analysis of nursing phenomena. The editor indicates that undergraduate students may be helped as well. Because of the complexity of thought in the book, I would recommend it for graduate students and nurses immersed in nursing theory. The editor is a credible authority. Four domains of nursing are developed and then used to theoretically analyze the ideas of nurse theorists including Roy, Rogers, Johnson, Orem, and King. The editor is innovative in that she builds upon current theoretical knowledge in nursing to extend this knowledge and discussion of it. The unique feature of the book is this extension of theoretical conceptualization in nursing, which is very valuable to both graduate nursing students and nurse theorists. This is a unique addition to the literature on nursing epistemology. The essential building blocks of nursing theory are analyzed. Although the editor writes in a very complexstyle, this complexity will provide necessary challenges for graduate nursing students and nurse theorists or philosophers. I highly recommend the book to those looking for interesting extensions of the concepts found in nursing theory. Biography Hesook Suzie Kim, PhD, RN, has been professor of nursing at the University of Rhode Island since 1979 and Professor II at the Institute of Nursing Science, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo in Norway from 1992 to 2003. She is professor emerita of nursing at the University of Rhode Island, from which she retired in 2004, and currently holds the professorship at Buskerud University College in Norway. Dr. Kim had taught at the University of Rhode Island since 1973 and was dean of the College of Nursing there from 1983 to 1988. Her PhD is in sociology from Brown University, and her nursing degrees (BS and MS) are from Indiana University. she has published extensively in the area of nursing epistemology, theory development in nursing, the nature of nursing practice, and collaborative decision-making in nursing practice as well as in various areas of clinical nursing research. Most notably, Dr. Kim is the author of a seminal book on the metaparadigm of nursing originally published in 1983, entitled The Nature of Theoretical Thinking in Nursing, the second edition of which was published in 2000.
