Период донского средневековья отражает много неизученных аспектов отечественной истории.

Древние славяне и окружавшие их народы дали истории образец компактного сосуществования различных этнокультурных групп в регионе, находящемся на стыке Европы и Азии, кочевых и земледельческих цивилизаций. Феномен исторического развития донских славян заключался не в случайном факте заселения выходцами из донской «Terra incognitа», выходцами из русских земель, а в единстве и преемственности этнокультурной истории, особенностях этногеографического развития славян на Дону.

Предметом исследования «Славяне средневекового Дона» являются конкретно-исторические вопросы племенной принадлежности славяно-русского населения региона, путей и пределов их расселения в приречной лесостепи Дона, социально-экономического и общественно-политического развития славян во взаимосвязи с ролью Донского торгового пути как связующей части Восточных и Западных цивилизаций. Авторы книги не могли не затронуть тесно связанные с темой их исследования вопросы истории Древнерусского государства, истории Хазарии, истории кочевников южных степей.

The period of the Don Middle Ages reflects many not studied aspects of a Russian history.

Ancient Slavs and the people surrounding them have given stories the sample of compact coexistence of various ethnocultural groups in the region which is on a joint of Europe and Asia, nomadic and agricultural civilisations. The phenomenon of historical development of the Don Slavs consisted not in the casual fact of settling by natives from Don «Terra incognitа», natives of Russian earths, and in unity and continuity of ethnocultural history, features of ethnogeographical development of Slavs on Don.

Object of research «Slavs of medieval Don» are concrete historical questions of a breeding accessory of the Slavic-and-Russian population of region, ways and limits of their moving in forest-steppes of Don, social and economic and political development of Slavs in interrelation with a role of the Don trading way as binding part of East and Western civilisations. Authors of the book should mention their researches closely connected with a theme questions of history of the Old Russian state, history of Hazaria, history of nomads of southern steppes.
