More Klaus Schlichtmann, "Japan in the World: Shidehara Kijuro, Pacifism, and the Abolition of War". My association with Japan started around 1960 with an interest in Buddhist literature and the East. After spending a couple of years in India I became active, in the 1970s, in the peace and environment movement, and eventually began a course of graduate studies at Kiel University, where I took up medieval and modern history as a major, and political science and public international law as my two minor subjects. When Hermann Kulke from the Heidelberg Institute of South-Asian Studies took over the chair for Asian history in Kiel, I switched to Asian history as my major. My master’s thesis in 1990 already focused on Shidehara diplomacy. In early 1992 during three months of private research in Japan I followed up on my previous work to learn more through daily visits to the Shidehara Peace Collection (Shidehara Heiwa Bunko) in Japan’s National Diet Library.My special thanks during this time go to Ms. Yasumoto Ken and her associates, who selflessly and energetically assisted me by providing accommodation and valuable material help and advice. Then, from September 1992 until August 1993, with a scholarship from the Japanese-German left in Berlin (JGCB), it was possible to get my doctoral dissertation underway, again under the direction of Hermann Kulke at Kiel University. The insights that Professor Kulke shared with me, as well as his encouragement and countless suggestions, his criticism, and his humor and patience during my studies and as a doctoral candidate have been crucial and of lasting value.
