Preparing for a standardized test, especially a test which involves high stakes, can be a controversial enterprise. Is it cheating to study older versions of the test? Will it be helpful? Are test preparation courses legal and, if so, are they ethical? These and other questions can lead some persons to take only a passing interest in such basics as getting to know the types of questions on an examination, reviewing the types of items presented on the examination, and so forth.

Of course, a systematic strategy for preparing for a standardized test is not only ethical but is also assumed by most test publishers. Most test publishers hope that an examinee’s performance will not be impaired by a lack of familiarity with the types of items on the test; paralyzing anxiety about the testing experience; or fatigue from an all-night cram session. Any of these activities, as well as many others, only cloud the inference test publishers desire to make about the level of mastery of a given examinee. Test preparation is ethical and essential.
