Die 'Bügeleisen' der Ostsee (Marine-Arsenal 21) By Siegfried Breyer Die Linienschiffe SCHLESIEN und SCHLESWIGHOLSTEIN gehörten einer Klasse von fünf Einheiten an und verkörperten den letzten deutschen Typ des sog. "Einheits-Linienschiffs", wie er sich bis zum Bau der britischen DREADNOUGHT entwickelt hatte. Als sie in den Jahren 1906 — 08 zur Flotte stießen, waren sie längst von der Entwicklung überholt und hatten nur noch einen zweitklassigen Stellenwert. Ihr Bau war in den ersten Jahren des neuen Jahrhunderts eingeleitet worden und ging auf die zweite Flottenvorlage zurück, die am 14. Juni 1900 Gesetzeskraft erhalten hatte. Erst diese Vorlage verschärfte den Gegensatz zu Großbritannien, denn sie lief auf eine Verdoppelung des Bestandes an Linienschiffen hinaus: Von 45 geforderten Linienschiffen waren 38 bewilligt worden. Dies sah man in Großbritannien als Provokation an;zu dieser Zeit verfügte die Royal Navy über etwa 60 fertige und im Bau befindliche "Battleships". Diese Neubauten waren haushaltsrechtlich nicht als Ersatzbauten in den Etat eingebracht worden, sondern als Vermehrungsbauten ; als solche führten sie die folgenden Bezeichnungen: Linienschiff N (= DEUTSCHLAND) Linienschiff O (= POMMERN) Linienschiff P (= HANNOVER) Linienschiff Q (= SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN) Linienschiff R (= SCHLESIEN). Typschiff war die DEUTSCHLAND, sie gab der Klasse ihren Namen. Ihr Entwurf entstand 1901 - 02 beim Konstruktionsdepartement der Kaiserlichen Marine, alle folgenden Schiffe wurden nach einem geringfügig abgewandelten Entwurf von 1902 — 03 gebaut. Die Baukosten pro Schiff lagen im Mittel bei 24,65 Millionen Goldmark für die gesamte Klasse. Am billigsten baute die Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven, am teuersten die Germania-Werft Kiel mit ihrem zweiten Schiff.
