More Hostplant Selection By Phytophagous Insects (Contemporary Topics in Entomology) This is the first book that focuses on the behavior of host-plant selection by plant-feeding insects. In it, the authors cover the patterns found in nature and the chemical features of plants that determine host selection. The sensory systems involved in making the selection are presented together with relevant functional studies. The central three chapters of the book are involved specifically with the actual behaviors: the mechanisms, the ecological and physiological variables, and the effects of experience on host-plant selection. Finally, the genetic variability is discussed, together with a comprehensive evaluation of the factors involved in the evolution of host-plant ranges. Other books on insects and herbivores generally focus on ecology or evolution, and the behaviors, which are so fundamental, tend to be neglected. Host Selection by Phytophagous Insects brings a realistic and up-to-date appraisal of this behavior in all its aspects, including the way in which behavior interacts with physiology, ecology, and evolution.
