Wenn im vorliegenden Band über das Fernkampfflugzeug Fw 200 C berichtet wird, so darf hierbei nie vergessen werden, daß dieses Flugzeug urprüng-lich ein Verkehrsflugzeug gewesen ist und nur nach den Forderungen einer Luftverkehrsgesellschaft, der Deutschen Lufthansa (DLH), entwickelt wurde. Die Fw 200, das Fernkampfflugzeug der Deutschen Luftwaffe, war daher ein Notbehelf und mit vielen Schwächen behaftet. Daß trotzdem dieses Flugzeug beim Gegner gefürchtet war, und die "Focke-Wolves" sogar vom britischen Premierminister Churchill öffentlich als gefährlicher Gegner bezeichnet wurde, ist nur dem Können deutscher Konstrukteure und den Besatzungen zu verdanken.

Anfang 1936 trafen bei einem Winterurlaub in den Dolomiten Dr. Stüssel, Technischer Chef bei der Lufthansa, und Kurt Tank, Technischer Direktor von Focke-Wulf, zusammen. Das Gespräch kam auf den Wunsch der DLH nach einem schnellen Ganzmetallflugzeug, viermotorig, mit höchstem Sicherheitsfaktor und höchster Wirtschaftlichkeit, das im Überseeluftverkehr eingesetzt werden konnte. Ein Landflugzeug im Überseeverkehr, ein damals unfaßbarer Gedanke; kamen dafür doch nur Flugboote in Frage!
