Von 1914 bis 1918 zogen die Unterseeboote aus den beispiellosen technischen Verbesserungen Nutzen. Anfänglich auf Einsätze in Küstengewässern beschränkt, wagten sie sich bald von ihren Stützpunkten immer weiter hinaus.

Unter der Führung von Kaiser Wilhelm II. erkannte das kaiserliche Deutschland rasch die offensiven Möglichkeiten der neuen Waffe.

Die Lehren des Großen Krieges

In diesem vierjährigen Konflikt waren die U-Boote in einen unbarmherzigen Kampf gegen die alliierte Schiffahrt verwickelt; sie fügten ihrem Gegner derart große Verluste zu, daß die Seeverbindungen über den Atlantik nach Großbritannien nahezu durchtrennt waren. Die Briten, die vor dem Kriege die größte Handelsflotte der Welt besaßen, verloren über neun Millionen BRTan Handelsschiffsraum oder annähernd 90 % ihrer Transportkapazität des Jahres 1914.

Die den Alliierten zugefügten schweren Verluste zeigten, daß das Unterseeboot im 1. Weltkrieg zu einer voll einsatzfähigen Waffe herangereift war.
