More English in Australia Australians seem to have a perennial fascination with the question of national identity. In the minds of most citizens (at least, as represented by those social surveyors and media commentators who report the national mindset), Australia is still undergoing a process of establishing a clear self-image and a national sense of purpose. In contrast, there is considerable evidence that Australia’s linguistic identity was established early in the history of the colony. According to the late A. G. Mitchell, the founder of Australian English (henceforth, “AusE”) studies, it is likely that the colony of New South Wales saw the formation of a variety approximating what we now know as Broad Australian as early as the 1830s (see Yallop, this volume). It is generally accepted that the origins of AusE lay in the dialects spoken in the south-east of England in the late 18th century. Language historians may argue over whether those dialects were mixed in the London area and then transported to Australia as a new amalgam, or whether the dialect contact processes that created AusE took place on Australian soil (Blair 1975; Trudgill 1986); thxxxx
