More There is something magical about killing your first mature bull elk, especially when it's done at point blank range with a bow. I had tried bowhunting for elk a couple of times in the past without success. It had been over ten years since I had last gone elk hunting. On those earlier hunts my partners and I never had a problem calling in elk or getting close to elk. But we had learned quickly that calling in an elk and calling in an elk and getting a shot are two totally different events. The memory of bulls as big as a horse; enraged with the anger of the rut, close enough you can see the veins on their neck without getting a shot, had me itching to return to the Rocky Mountain West. When the opportunity came to join my friend's elk hunting again I jumped at the chance. I knew the odds of success would be low; overall success for bowhunters is only about 14%. Expecting to get a bull elk, or even a cow would was not even realistic. I had decided not to let my expectations get too high. My goal was to have fun, enjoy the company of my companions and hopefully work a bull in close. Even though I kept my expectation low I planned for success. My Links To thank me use my links, please!
