World events in the late 1980s and early 1990s have resulted in the rethinking of political views. Educational reforms commonly attributed to Thatcherism and Reganism were taking place in other countries around the world. This book traces the development of the British education system from 1944. In so doing, it examines the nature of the ideological differences in education between the two major political parties in order to explore the possibility of planning for educational consensus, and the kind of consensus that might be possible. The author considers the emergence of these ideological differences within the context of the 1988 Education Reform Act and takes into account the emergence of the "New left" politics in education and its influence on educational policies globally. It is aimed at BEd/MA/MEd students and lecturers, education historians, researchers and policy makers.
