More Die Schlachtschiffe der "Bayern"-Klasse (Marine-Arsenal 29) By Siegfried Breyer Mit den Schlachtschiffen (damals amtlich als "Linienschiffe" bezeichnet) der KÖNIG-KIasse (siehe "Marine-Arsenal" Band 26) war man in Deutschland zur Aufstellung der Schweren Artillerie (SA) ausschließlich in der Schiffssymmetrieachse übergegangen. Das war nur möglich, weil man - wie erstmals bei der vorangegangenen KAISER-Klasse (siehe "Marine-Arsenal" Band 25) praktiziert - vergleichsweise zu den ersten Großkampfschiffen der Kaiserlichen Marine (NASSAU- und HELGOLAND-Klasse, siehe "Marine-Arsenal" Band 17) die SA um einen Türm verringert hatte. Dadurch war Gewicht freigeworden, das der Panzerung zugeschlagen werden konnte: Die Seitenpanzerdicke ließ sich so auf 350 mm erhöhen. Damit war man von der hergebrachten Faustregel abgewichen, nach der die Panzerdicke höchstens der Kaliberstärke der eigenen SA entsprechen sollte. Dieser Schritt führte dazu, daß die neuesten deutschen Schlachtschiffe einen sehr beachtenswerten Zugewinn an Defensivkraft aufzuweisen hatten. Eine Kalibererhöhung war bei ihnen nicht erfolgt, weil das vorhandene 30,5 cm-Geschütz dem 1909 eingeführten britischen 34,3 cm-Geschütz an Leistung und Wirkung nur wenig nachzustehen schien. Etwa zeitgleich waren die Amerikaner und Japaner zum 35,6 cm-Geschütz übergegangen, mit dem sie ihre neuesten Großkampfschiffe (TEXAS-resp. KONGO-Klasse) bestückten; beide hatten damit auf die britische Kalibererhöhung reagieren wollen. Dies vermochte die deutsche Seite nicht allzu sehr beunruhigen, denn beide Staaten zählten nicht zu den potentiellen Gegnern; gleichwohl war man sich aber darüber im Klaren, daß man in naher Zukunft nicht an einer Kalibersteigerung vorbeikommen werde.
