More Nach neuesten Erkenntnissen ist der Mensch biologisch darauf angelegt, sein Erbgut möglichst weit zu streuen, sei er nun männlich oder weiblich. Aber wenn es tatsächlich nur darum geht, Nachkommenschaft mit möglichst vielen verschiedenen Partnern zu produzieren, warum gibt es dann die Eifersucht, dieses Gefühl wie ein Fausthieb in die Magengrube, das bei den einen zu tiefer Depression und bei den anderen zu grenzenloser Wut führt? David M. Buss, Psychologieprofessor an der Harvard University und an der University of Texas in Austin, ist dieser Frage auf den Grund gegangen. Er erklärt, warum nicht nur Frauen eifersüchtig werden (sie können einen Familienversorger verlieren), sondern auch Männer (sie können sich bei einer fremdgehenden Frau nicht sicher sein, dass die Nachkommen auch tatsächlich von ihnen sind). Aber Buss erklärt auch, dass diese grundlegenden Eifersuchtsmuster heutzutage unbewusst ablaufen, wie Recht die meisten haben, wenn ihr Gefühl ihnen sagt, dass ihr Partner fremd geht, und dass Eifersucht eine Beziehung auch sexuell frisch halten kann. David Buss ist Professor für Psychologie an der University of Texas. Zurzeit leitet er dort die Abteilung Individuelle Unterschiede und Evolutionäre Psychologie. Nach seiner Doktorarbeit 1981 an der University of California in Berkeley war er vier Jahre lang Assistant Professor an der Harvard University. 1985 wechselte er an die University of Michigan, wo er elf Jahre lang lehrte, bevor er 1996 dem Ruf an die University of Texas folgte. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die evolutionäre Psychologie menschlicher Paarungsstrategien, Konflikte zwischen den Geschlechtern, Prestige, Status und soziale Reputation, Eifersucht, Mord, Anti-Mordstrategien und Stalking. Seine bahnbrechende Forschung hat ein breites Echo in den Medien erfahren, so etwa in Artikeln in Newsweek, U.S. News&World Report, The New York Times, Washington Post sowie im Spiegel.
