More Autor: Steve Ginter "Convair XFY-1 Pogo" In 1947 both the U. S. Air Force and the U. S. Navy sponsored VTOL design studies called Project Hummingbird. The rapid development of increasingly powerful power plants had reached the point where a true VTOL aircraft was in the realm of possibility. The Air Force's motive came from its firsthand experiences in Europe at the end of World War Two. The U. S. Air Force had demonstrated how swiftly fixed airfields could be overrun. It was evident from this ex¬perience that any future war would be won or lost within the first twenty-four hours and the winner would accomplish this through the elimi¬nation of the loser's airfields. This vulnerability of fixed bases is what has made the U. S. Navy's carrier task force the politician's tool of choice to solve peacekeeping issues into the 1990s. However, the U. S. Navy's firsthand experiences with Japans Kamikaze taught them the vul¬nerability of their great mobile peacekeepers, the carrier. Because of this experience the Navy felt that the only way to protect any naval presence in enemy waters was to equip all ships with a VTOL fighter. LINKS Thanks Rapidshare link:
