Ifyou do not expect too much you will be delighted with it. I found thebook/dvd combo to be a great way to supplement my Qigong training. Thereare no chapters, meaning, it is all one chapter. You have to do alot offast forwarding if you want to follow along. You cannot beat it for theprice. Despite all of the shortcomings I have ordered the otherbook/dvd combo (wu qin xi).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great exercise to discover, July 26, 2010

Thisreview is from: Yi Jin Jing: Tendon-Muscle Strengthening QigongExercises [With Instructional DVD] (Chinese Health Qigong) (Paperback)

Ihave practiced Tai chi for two years and was pleasantly surprised todiscover these muscle/tendon exercises. Like Tai chi, they appear to bedeceptively simple, but they are quite a workout capable of generating agood sweat and making you feel stronger. The instruction is excellent. He demonstrates the exercises in their entirety and then breaks down themoves in stages also demonstrating common mistakes. The DVD is quitesimple to follow. Yi Jin Jing exercises take about 20 minutes and theresults are noticeable immediately. Within days you feel stronger. Ihighly recommend Yi Jin Jing from the Chinese Health Qigong Assocation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Qi Gong Routine and comes with DVD, October 2, 2008

By

stephen Luff (Worthing, Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Thisreview is from: Yi Jin Jing: Tendon-Muscle Strengthening QigongExercises [With Instructional DVD] (Chinese Health Qigong) (Paperback)

Thisset is based on an original Yi Jin Jing set that dates back to adescription of the exercises in the Bibliographic Treatise: History ofthe Han Dynasty almost 2000 years ago. A Brocade painting namedIllustration of Qi Conduction was unearthed in the 1970s - containingover 40 illustrations of exercises.

This newer version of the setput together by the Chinese Health QiGong Association has absorbed thebest from the set while applying modern scientific principles.

Thereare 12 movements in all, focusing on tendon stretching and boneflexing, combining softness with strength. The set relies heavily on theChinese traditional medicine theory of the 5 elements - Wood, Fire,Earth, metal and Water.

There is a focus on Spine Turning andflexing - stimulating the nerve cords, and exercising the internalorgans as well as the limbs.

There are some nice exotic hand postures such as Lotus leaf palm;, willow leaf palm, Dragons claw and Tigers paw.

Theroutine itself is a smooth blend of gradual warming up and stilling themind movements, to some very unusual twists and turns that reallystretch the upper body and neck. There is also plenty of lower limbstretching in this routine as well. All done in an upright position.Applying common sense to some of the deeper stretches, this routine isachievable for all ages. In fact I teach it seated in care homes andsome abled-bodied elderly groups, as well as younger groups - who allcomment on how much they enjoy the routine.

I was looking for aroutine that had some good deep stretching in it but was achieved in avery smooth and flowing manner. This routine really offers that. I thinkits unique enough to be added into any existing Qi Gong program or justas a single routine of daily practice.

Having played with theroutine a while now I would add a few words about over-enthusiasm. Stickto the recommended number of repetitions in the beginning. If you haveany form of a lower back problem - dont be tempted to do more in thebeginning. I overdid three plates falling to the floor on top of 3straight days of long hours at the Computer, along with a heavy weightsworkout and - surprise surprise - pulled my lower back, which lasted 5days. Some will never learn! The lower back is a sensitive place. Itresponds extremely well to moderate exercise and can give you back greatflexibility. Do nothing and it ceases up - overdo it and it ceases up.Responds best to moderation and a gradual increase in a stretching andstrengthening workout.

Also most importantly, this book comes with a very useful DVD that is in English.

My personal opinion

Someof the reviews gave some negative ratings, but I think that depends onhow one sees it. I watched the DVD myself and did find the movements tobe very simple; however it also means that they are also easy to learnand practicable by people of all ages and medical conditions.Nevertheless, it does not necessarily diminish its efficacy in bringingabout health benefits just because of its simplicity.

To illustrate this point, I recommend that those interested can go to the Chinese Health Qigong Association Website:

_jsqg.sport.org.cn/en/tips/yjj/index.html

Thereare plenty of interesting, informative and useful in-depth articlesthat one can read through to have a more thorough knowledge of Yi jinJing. Articles include research on the impact of Health Qigong (such asYi Jin Jing on the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) of old and middle-agedpeople), An Analysis of the Mechanism of Health QigongYi Jin Jing(recommended for those who doubt the efficacy on the basis of itssimplicity, or for those who want to know the spirit and theory behindit in order to increase the efficacy of their practice), and furtherknowledge on how to practise Yi Jin Jing effectively and safely in FiveSteps for Learning Yi Jin Jing and Practicing Techniques of HealthQigongYi Jin Jing.

From looking at the vast amount of detailedresearch that the Chinese Health Qigong Association has given to themulti-faceted aspects of the practice of Yi Jin Jing, it is quiteundoubtedly clear that those folks there are truly serious about itspractice and are the authority and the real deal.
