Freivogel Die deutsche Kriegsmarine verfügte 1939 beim Kriegsausbruch nur über 22 Zerstörer, davon wurde dieZ 22 erst nach dem Ausbruch der Feindseligkeiten in Dienst gestellt. Grund dafür war, daß die Neuentwicklung der Zerstörer relativ spät angefangen hat, vor allem wegen der restriktiven Bestimmungen des Friedensvertrages von Versailles. Die vorhandenen Einheiten gehörten den Klassen ../ 1" und ../ 17" (bzw. den Typen „Zerstörer 1934", „Zerstörer 1934A" und „Zerstörer 1936"). Diese Schiffe galten als „Mädchen für alles", so waren ihre Verluste in den ersten Kriegsjahren übermäßig groß, vor allem im Frühling 1940, wo während der Norwegen-Kampagne zehn Schiffe dieser Gattung in Narwik verloren gingen1. In 1939 gab es auch 15 Torpedoboote, nur elf davon waren nach dem I. Weltkrieg erbaut Weitere Zerstörer (von Z 23 bis Z 30) und Flottentorpedoboote Hl- 21): befanden sich in Bau oder waren bestellt. Während des Krieges hatte man weitere Zerstörer und T-Boote in Auftrag gegeben, bis zum Kriegsende sind nur zehn Zerstörer (Z 31-39, Z 43) und 15 T-Boote (T22-T 36) tatsächlich in Dienst gestellt worden.
