Attila Zoller was the first jazz guitarist who seriously explored the realm of "free" or avant garde playing although he concentrated on more "straight ahead" jazz in the latter years of his life, along with an increasing devotion to the Vermont Jazz left that he founded. The VJC is a major institution for jazz education, located in southern Vermont. Attila performed with many of the world's great jazz artists including Benny Goodman, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Herbie Hancock, Lee Konitz, Jim Hall. He was granted patents for guitar pick-ups, strings, etc., and designed guitars as well as other instruments. As teacher and mentor to many guitar students (e.g. Pat Metheny), Attila Zoller did much to perpetuate the art form of jazz guitar. In 1995 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Foundation for the Arts. (Extract from the biography on the enjarecords website)
