In this unique and timely volume, Scott Shane systematically explains the formation of university spinoff companies and their role in the commercialization of university technology and wealth creation in the United States and elsewhere. The importance of university spinoff activity is discussed and the historical development of university spinoff ventures is traced over time.

Interesting read about what recent research on university sponsored spinoffs indicates. The book does a good job of synthesizing what one might find by sifting through academic papers and resources at The Kaufmann Foundation. Shane shares what is known, what the limitations are, and what appears to be a reasonable conclusion. Lesser authors would either hide behind the lack of existing research (overly academic) and provide no useful framework or hide the weakness of the data (typical consultant who tries to "sell" the framework).

Also, Shane has a crisp writing style that will make this book hard to put down if you are interested in this topic.
