For those not familiar with this unit, one must go back to the Kobaian planet and its artist/historian called Magma back in 72. There was a Coup D'Etat and the real democratic collaboration in the music was wiped out as the sole LieDhr MaczimusH Kommandhr Vanderh took the reins not allowing anyone else's input anymore. This meant that the very organized, severely serious and incredibly tight music would have even less room for improvisation. So "Faton"Cahen and his Hungarian origin Seffer colleagues left to form Zao, the first offshoot of Magma and very much the better example of Zheul music outside of Magma . They enlisted Vietnamese-born Jean-My Truong as their drummer and African Born Mauricia Platon as their porte-parole.

Zao's music was much the same as its forefather Magma but included some elements that would make Zao more fun: fantasy non-Kobaian vocals, a good dose of improvisation and a pinch of ethnic/folk music. This first album is essential listening for everyone into fusion music . The weird tilte Z=7L might come from the fact that if you were to merge the vertical lines of 7 and L, one would have Z=Z. Just an educated guess but yours is as good as mine.
