Lyrics & Music Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds (1961)

More Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds (1961) Genre: Jazz Cduniverse.com: This 1961 release may be significant in the vast canon of jazz recordings if only because it predates John Coltrane's forays into Eastern modal music. Coltrane didn't really explore the connection between jazz and Eastern musical styles until A LOVE SUPREME. Certainly, it is widely accepted that Coltrane's 1965 landmark albums, TRANSITION, KULU SE MAMA, and ASCENSION firmly established him as the main practitioner of Eastern influenced modal jazz. However, on Lateef's EASTERN SOUNDS, we hear the tenor man forging new territory years prior to Coltrane's experiments. Indeed, Lateef draws many fine musical parallels between the music of the Orient and American jazz on this outing. Lateef's experiments are quite successful on this recording, even though the album's conception is somewhat stymied by his mainstream jazz roots. For example, a straight-up (albeit beautiful) version of the standard "Don't Blame Me" seems out of place with Lateef's own wacky compositions. Still, "The Plum Blossom," "Chinq Miau" and the outlandish album closer, "The Three Faces of Balal" are quite compelling, making this record a valuable and unique asset to any CD collection. Reviewer: Yusef Lateef is by far the most underrated horn player in the history of jazz. No doubt about it. Whoever I ask about him, people just make a very surprised expression of face. They look even more amazed when I tell them what a brilliant musician he is. Eastern Sounds is probably his most distinguished and well-known work showing Yusef play not only regular tenor sax but also some not very often used instruments like oboe and flute. The album indeed has an oriental, eastern feeling especially in tunes where Lateef uses oboe and flute ("The Plum Blossom" or "Love Theme From 'Spartacus'"). The second one is especially interesting showing the popular, romantic theme played on oboe. The oriental element is sometimes enhanced by the accompaniment of the rhythm section. On tracks like "Purple Flower", "Don't Blame Me" or "Snafu" you can admire Yusef's brilliant tenor sax playing. It's simply topnotch. Listening to him you realize that there's much more to great sax in jazz than just Trane and Sonny Rollins. It's just harder to dig such diamonds out. But for this site I myself would probably have never discovered Lateef. Although I prefer Live At The Pep's Vol. 2, I think that Eastern Sounds would be a better place to start discovering Lateef. It's hard to say why but I always find myself listening to Eastern Sounds at night. It's really soothing and relaxing before you go to sleep. So just get it as soon as possible. Become aware of Yusef Lateef's genius because you're really missing out. Personnel: Yusef Lateef (tenor saxophone, oboe, flute); Barry Harris (piano); Ernie Farrow (bass); Lex Humphries (drums) Tracks: 1. Plum Blossom, The 2. Blues For The Orient 3. Chinq Miau 4.
