More World Special Forces Insignia (Elite 22) By Gordon L. Rottman Roger Beaumont, in his Military Elites, questions whether elite forces are worth the cost and if their past effectiveness has enhanced overall force performance. His and others' works also address various adverse effects of the maintenance of elite units: "leadership drain", the 'selection-destruction cycle', resource over-allocation, misutilisation, politically-backed origins, and resentment among conventional forces. While all of these caveats are valid to certain degrees, many who critically appraise elite forces often miss the point entirely. Peacetime armies tend to be more tolerant of elite units, maintaining them as 'window dressing', either to make a political statement, an economic show of force, or to act as a pressure release for the young and daring.
