Women of the Humiliatin makes clear that women played a far more significant role in the group than has previously been ascribed to them. Indeed, archival evidence suggests that they dominated the group's membership. Beyond illuminating an important but understudied topic, this work reveals the inventive ways in which women in medieval Italy were able to satisfy their spiritual and economic needs within the confines of a male dominated church and society. checked
