Lyrics & Music Come the Mountain

More Witch Mountain - ...Come the Mountain “…Come the Mountain” has it all. It’s dynamic, it’s diverse, it’s creative and most of all, it’s got the songs! Something that a lot of bands in the Stoner/Doom realm just don’t have. The songwriting is what really stands out and makes me go WOW! The lyrics are deep and intelligent but also maintain a deliberate ambiguity that actually makes you think a little bit about what each song is about. On the surface songs appear to be about love, and break ups and even racial, social and political issues. But when you pay attention to the lyrics from the start of the first song through to the end of the last song you will realize that they make up a larger, less serious story that really has nothing to do with your immediate interpretations. Although, even once you think you’ve figured out the story of the whole album, you’re probably not completely correct. It always leaves you wondering and asking questions. Which is brilliant! I think Robwrong does the majority of the songwriting and lyrical content. He also plays a mean lead guitar and does most of the vocals. It’s also due to his guitar stylings and vocals that I deem “…Come the Mountain” an instant classic. Technically he may not be quite on par with legends like Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Josh Homme and Wino but it’s impossible to deny that he plays with the same finess and creative ability. His leads are loose and fluid and always serve to highten the tension , or increase the emotional impact of a song. It’s like he channels all of his emotions through his fingers into his guitar. His s t y l e brings the same feelings of elation to the listener that only Jimi, Tony, Josh, John McBain and a few other iconic guitarists have achieved. His vocal delivery pretty much parrallels his guitar delivery. Powerful, intense, emotional but possibly lacking in the technical aspect of singing. Which, in my opinion, only serves to make it a better and more “real” experience. Sometimes he’s obviously singing out of his range and often his voice cracks or is off key. But that’s usually a result of him giving the lyric the full power and intensity that it deserves. Which gives me the impression that he really means what he’s singin about! And as with any other great band, the leadman is not the only shining star. Backing Robwrong up with a rock solid rhythm section are Nate Carson on drums and Kip Larson on bass. Nate’s extremely precise and mathy-yet-creative approach to the drums and Kip’s distorted full toned bass serve to even furher enhance already great songs. They definitely don’t relax in the background just playing enough rhythm to back Rob up. It’s like they’re delivering their own interpretations of each song completely separate from each other while still, maintaining perfect timing, keeping it interesting and totally absorbing the listener, commanding them to pay attention to every instrument. I know many of you already own Witch Mountain’s “Homegrown Doom” demo CD-R and I also know that many of you really enjoy it. You would, however, probably admit to it being a little too mathy and doom-centric for the average listener, maybe even a little stiff. “…Come the Mountain” is a totally different animal even though it contains re-recorded versions of all the songs on “Homegrown Doom”. This new effort from Witch Mountain is chocked full of southern fried Skynyrd s t y l e groove and beautifully executed harmonies with Kip Larson attacking a portion of the vocals and back-up vocals with a s t y l e very similar to Rob’s – sometimes you can’t tell them apart at all. “…Come the Mountain” also erases that fine line between “Stoner” and “Doom” sensibilities so that both s t y l es mingle in perfect harmony. Erica from Lost Goat also lends her vocal ability to the second song on the album “A Power Greater” (Lyrics by Nate) adding yet another dimension to this already multi-dimensional excursion. “…Come the Moutain” has just leaped left to the top of my “Best albums of 2000” list. It’s only serious competitor for the number 1 spot so far is “R” by Queens of the Stone Age and I suspect possibly Abdullah’s or Astroqueen’s debuts, when they’re released later this year. And if you think I’m saying all this about Witch Mountain just because Robwrong works for StonerRock.com – then you’re a stupid asshole. That’s not what we’re about! This review is my honest interpretation of a really fucking good album and I’ve only got the unmastered, rough mixes on MP3. I can’t wait to hear the final-mix version that will be released on Rage of Achilles Records later this year! That is all… by: Dan Beland (StonerRock.com) Rob Wrong (vocals, guitar) Nate "Nanotear" Carson (drums) Dave Hoopaugh (bass) Johnny Belluzzi (guitar) 1 Rock On 2 Indian Passage 3 Victim of Chord Changes 4 Foxy Mule 5 A Power Greater (Featuring Erica Stoltz of Lost Goat) 6 Iron Long (Part 1) 7 Iron Long (Part 2) 8 Rocaine 9 Iron Long (Part 3) 10 The Scientist's a) Confession b) Execution c) Last Thoughts Download: pw: pigandpepper
