Wendy S. Ayres - African Network on Participatory Approaches, Village Participationin Rural Development Manual Tools

In 1998, a workshop was held in Parakou, Benin, to bring together participants from Benin, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali and Uganda and from national and international development organizations to discuss a training manual on village participation in rural development. It addresses the question of how to expand participatory management on a national scale in a relatively short period of time.

The manual comprises 3 parts.

In part 1, the objectives and general principles of the participatory approach (PA) are presented.

In part 2, the execution of village action plans is outlined.

In part 3, the conditions for successful implementation are described. Subjects include the importance of decentralization for the PA and the impact of PA on agricultural extension.
