Transcending the boundaries of technology and imagination, WAKING LIFE is a revolutionary breakthrough in film animation. Originally shot and edited as live action, the footage was then graphically “painted” frame by frame via computer by a team of more than 30 artists. The feeling created is that of an impressionist painting breathing with life.

WAKING LIFE represents a unique union of the worlds of computer and film embodied in the talents of writer/director Richard Linklater and computer animation savant Bob Sabiston, the creator of the unique “interpolated rotoscoping” software that gave birth to WAKING LIFE.

In WAKING LIFE, Wiley Wiggins travels through a series of encounters and observations in a world that may or may not be reality. It is this surreal existence, flourishing with endless ideas and possibilities, that ultimately leads to the question, “Are we sleep-walking through our waking state or wake-walking through our dreams?”

& 8220;Andrea Chase, KillerMovieReviews.com wrote:

WAKING LIFE is that rarest of films, one that is unique. Take one slacker and cycle him, or at least his consciousness, through a series of conversations, lectures really, by devotes of different philosophies. But more, take the film footage and put it through an animation technique called interpolated rotoscoping and what you get is, ironically considering the title, a dreamlike excursion through physics, metaphysics, and lunatic ravings on a heroic scale. Startling in its originality, dazzling in its erudition, it fearlessly tackles questions of free will, identity and the nature of reality itself while never losing its dream-within-a-dream quality. And that’s good, because its central theme is whether waking life is in any meaningful way different that dreaming, or better, lucid dreaming. Nor does it slip into the swamps of pretentious pedantry. Linklater is serious here, but not insufferable. Sly humor delivers the message as easily as a logical proposition.

To use an analogy that falls hopelessly short, it’s sort of like FANTASIA meets MY DINNER WITH ANDRE. No dancing hippos, though, or bemused waiters, though the fantastical still applies. Trees palpate, houses disarticulate into a vibrating dance, words and ideas, as befits a film about them, are made manifest and hang in the air as a sometime sardonic antiphony to the text.

Our slacker guide is Wiley Wiggins, from Linklater’s film DAZED AND CONFUSED. He drifts silently for the most part through the film’s segments, sometimes on screen, as with rhapsodic rhetorician Speed Levitch as he salsa dances with his condition, or a college professor-type, waxing optimistic about the future of human evolution. Sometimes he’s off screen, observing with us, eavesdropping on a conversation between two pals over coffee as they discuss identity, or an angry, possibly psychotic prisoner, yowling his plans for revenge on the people who incarcerated him, plans that involve scissors and lighted cigarettes.

Slowly Wiley realizes through clues he’s given that he’s dreaming, clues like a digital clock with distorted numbers, a light switch that doesn’t work. Linklater himself appears at the end telling Wiley that all he has to do is wake up, though, tellingly, teasingly, he doesn’t tell him how.

Think of the best bull session you had in college, the all-night kind where you and your fellows debated every philosophical musing that you could think of or invent. That’s the starting point for WAKING LIFE. It’s then distilled into an enigmatic, seductive lucid dream using rotoscoped live-action. The effect preserves the messiness of real life, the way it moves, while transmuting it into a flight of the most ethereal fantasy.

Writer/director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, A Scanner Darkly) takes the audience on a psychedelic mind-trip into the world of dreaming. A man wanders around in his own dream meeting various people who preach the meaning and purpose of life and has multiple false awakenings in the process. He begins to question what is real and what is fictional and soon wonders if this is the result of death. The cast includes Wiley Wiggins, Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, Adam Goldberg, Steven Soderbergh, and Richard Linklater himself.

It all comes down to what Linklater was trying to accomplish. Whether it's due to an abundant flow of ideas and theories or just proof that he handled every drug known to man during his college days, Linklater has a way of drawing his audience into his dream world of distorting illusion and conventional conversations pertaining to evolution, the media, and isolation. The majority of these conversations are contrived and just don't make much sense. But when the occasional well thought out theory is explained thoroughly, one can't help but dwell on these perspectives and immediately become enmeshed in Linklater's world of hypothetical analysis.

The animation is trippy. Objects move when they should be stationary and the characters change shape and colors, even becoming transparent at times. It's an ambitious work of art with an imaginative glance into the world of surrealism, an hypnotic way of explaining one's perception of dreams and reality. It's a film for the thinking crowd, the type of movie that will test your knowledge and proclaim its existence into your memory.

It's absurd in the fact that the entire film is unpredictable and that random thoughts become rationed out though different perspectives. However, this absurdity is what keeps the film interesting. There's quite a bit to look at here (a gift to the eyes) and enough to intrigue and bring out inner thoughts about life (a treat to the ears and mind). I can't say that the film will be completely engaging, but I found most of these principles associated with life to be utterly fascinating.

Linklater has many thoughts crowding his head and this seems like the best way of displaying his loopy mindset and ultimately activating the gears in the viewer's brain. What Richard Linklater does here is provide a way of dealing with dreams; he put a new brand of animation on the map in the process. In the end, Linklater does justice to the mind and brings something distinctive and new to the table. A standing ovation is required.
