Die wechselvolle Entwicklungsgeschichte des Waffenträger WIESEL 1 reicht zurück bis 1969. als Taktiker und Techniker des Bundesverteidigungsministeriums und des Heeresamtes erstmals ihre Gedanken über ein Nachfolgefahrzeug für den bei der Luftlandedivision im Einsatz befindlichen "Kraka" (Kraftkarren) formulierten. Nach diesen ersten Entwürfen Taktischer Forderungen (TaF) wurde ab Mitte 1970 von der Firma Porsche die Realisierbarkeit geeigneter Ketten- und Radfahrzeuge untersucht.

Alle Lösungsvorschläge der Konzeptstudien waren jedoch nur in größeren Transportflugzeugen, wie der Hercules C-130 bzw. Transall C-160 luftverlast-bar, da die Gefechtsgewichte zwischen 6 und 7,5 t lagen. Aufgrund dieser Ergebnisse wurde das TaF-Konzept mit folgenden Neuerungen überdacht:

— Lufttransportfähigkeit nicht nur mit Transportflugzeugen, sondern auch mit dem Mittleren Transporthubschrauber CH-53G, dadurch Gewichtsobergrenze von max. 6 t und Limitierung äußerer Abmessungen;

— Absetzbarkeit per Fallschirm und

— Nutzung der Bewaffnungsvarianten

* Maschinenkanone 20 mm (MK 20)

* Panzerabwehrraketensystem (PARS) HOT

* schwerer Mörser 120 mm.
