The Arte Ensemble, founded by soloists of the NDR Radio Philharmonic, is now presenting quartets and trios by the composer Adam Valentin Volckmar for the first time on CD. Born in Schmalkalden, Thuringia, Volckmar spent most of his life in Rinteln an der Weser, where he was highly regarded as an organist. According to the Swiss music publisher Pauler, "Volckmar's chamber works stand high above the practical performance pieces of their time. Their technical brilliance, their noble melos, and the balanced part writing make them musical treasures of high classicism." After his death Volckmar's works unfortunately quickly fell into oblivion, but some of them are still extant in the Volckmar Collection of the Rinteln Museum. An outstanding contribution to the chamber literature and a welcome addition to the standard repertoire of the classical era!
