Robert McNamara, unter Kennedy und Johnson US-Verteidigungsminister, bekennt nach fast 30 Jahren seine Mitschuld an dem "großen schrecklichen Irrtum", die Rettung eines Dschungelregimes für das nationale Interesse Amerikas zu halten. In seinem Buch beschreibt er, wie das Scheitern einer übermächtigen Militärmaschinerie am Freiheitswillen eines geknechteten Volkes und an der Kriegsunlust einer ganzen Generation möglich war. Robert Strange McNamara, geb. 1916, Harvard-Student der Wirtschaftswissenschaften, war ab 1946 als Manager der Ford Motor Company tätig. 1960 berief Kennedy ihn zum Verteidigungsminister der USA. Nach seinem Rücktritt 1968 übernahm er das Amt des Präsidenten der Weltbank und überraschte viele mit seinem Einsatz für die Menschen in Entwicklungsländern. Aus dem Organisator des Vietnam-Krieges ist ein vehementer Rüstungskritiker geworden.
