Muti directs a vivid performance with plenty of energy, and La Scala Chorus & Orchestra are highly responsive to his demands. Maestro is really on the fast side, considering the fact that the text is absolutely complete, and this amounts to 2 hours and 45 minutes of music, playing time often exceeded by versions with cuts, but nowhere you get the impression of music moving too fast.

Domingo (Don Alvaro) maintains an even vocal line from the beginning to the end, though one wishes his top would be easier. There are numerous places for the tenor to yield to lachrymose singing, especially in the big aria "O tu che in seno agli angeli", but Domingo overcomes that with a firm, heroic tone, and his characterisation is purely on vocal and musical terms, avoiding effects like sobbing and other obtrusive sounds. A warm, heart-felt performance.

Zancanaro (Don Carlo) is, of course, no Milnes or Cappuccilli, but your ears quickly adjust to his dark, somewhat evil timbre, probably ideal for the Count of Luna and Jago. He gives a commanding performance, full of character and incisiveness, and there is no lack of 'italianita' in his singing.

(...) Mirella Freni (Leonora) went really too far this time round, since the role is on the heavy side for her, even more than Aida, also recorded for EMI, and she sounds seriously overtaxed. Her top suffers a great deal and in places she tends to depress her voice too much to compensate for the lack of volume. The duet with Padre Guardiano stretches her to the limits of her possibilities and there is no beauty in what is supposed to be one of the climaxes of this opera. Her vocal acting is more appropriate to Puccini rather than Verdi, relying on portamentos and all kinds of excessive breathing. There is no abandon in the famous aria "Pace, pace, mio Dio!", and the very final scene is the finest piece, pure, lyric singing, so natural to her.

(...) The biggest snag is the recording balance. Although a digital recording (and a reasonably recent one, 1986) one has the impression to listen to an outstanding live performance. The sound is dry and boxed, voices have no bloom and are placed too close to the microphones. Mixing of the orchestra and soloists is far below EMI's best (...). A customer from Amazon.co.uk
