In the spring of 1973, ORTF decided to organise a concert performance of Aida with an international cast (Lavirgen from Spain, Pappas from Greece, the Italians Alberti and Roni, etc.). Sanzogno was felt to be the ideal conductor. The first-night gossip concerned above all the opera's protagonist, a black soprano from America's deep south (Augusta, Georgia, to be precise). Not yet thirty, Jessye Norman had made her debut the previous year at La Scala in the same role: she had replaced Martina Arroyo in the performances conducted by Claudio Abbado, receiving, along with a few witticisms about her shape, universal acclaim for her vocal abilities. Paris, which traditionally has a weakness for dark-skinned Aidas (Leontyne Price, Grace Bumbry), virtually authentic Ethiopin slaves, was hoping to discover another member of that illustrious line (significantly, her curriculum revealed her to be a pupil of that venerable master, Pierre Bernac). Not only did Jessye Norman triumph, but in a few seasons she established herself as the supreme prima donna of the Paris stage. The French capital ended up adopting her with the same fervour they had reserved earlier for Josephine Baker. In fact, in summer 1989, during the solemn celebrations for the bicentenary of the French Revolution, she was the undisputed star of the worldwide live broadcast, a monumental Marianne drapped in red, white and blue, singing the Marsellaise in the Place de la Bastille.
