The British folk movement of the 1960s scarcely concerned itself with the perils of war. The flower power crusade, while flourishing, took a backseat to the wave of traditional fervor that spawned Celt-rock acts like Pentangle, Steeleye Span, and Fairport Convention. While U.S. audiences were singing along to "Puff the Magic Dragon," the U.K. was dancing to a much darker muse. Creepy fiddle tunes like "The Ungodly," by Decameron, and stark laments such as "Dirty Old Town," by the Ian Campbell Folk Group, eclipsed the sweeter, London-based ballads by the likes of Gerry Rafferty and Ralph McTell. Volume one of The Best of British Folk is a great introduction to the scene, with an extraordinarily diverse lineup of artists.

The second installment of Castle Music's Best of British Folk series is another solid mix of traditional and original music from some of the United Kingdom's finest singers and instrumentalists. Highlights include Ralph McTell's dreamy "Kew Gardens," Gryphon's medieval romp "Kemp's Jig," and the twee "Lady Mary" by the Sallyangie, featuring famed siblings Sally and Mike Oldfield. With superb pacing and a healthy dose of out of print material, Best of British Folk, Vol. 2 is a worthy addition to collectors of the genre.
