What do you do when you have some time to spare, and feel like experimenting with Jazz and Funk ? Exactly, you take off for London, team up with a few fellow musicians, and jam away :-)

Still in 1971, Vangelis played several sessions in the London Marquee Studios, some of them together with violinist Michel Ripoche, bass guitarist Brian Odger and drummer Tony Oxley. For some reason the recordings were never released at the time, and lay shelved until 1978, when Charly Records suddenly released the music under the name 'Hypothesis'. Apparently this release wasn't approved by Vangelis, as he successfully went to court to get the album off the market.

"Hypotesis" es, junto con "The Dragon", uno de dos de los elementos más raros de la discografía de VANGELIS (y por raro no quiero decir “difícil de conseguir”, sino extraño, ambiguo). Ambos se grabaron en sendas sesiones de improvisación que se realizaron justo después de la disolución de APHRODITE’S CHILD, a principio de los años 1970’s, y se publicaron bajo el nombre de VANGELIS, sin su consentimiento, a finales de los 70’s, para aprovechar la enorme fama lograda por el Maestro. De hecho, el mismo VANGELIS demandó a la casa disquera por esta edición, y aunque ignoro si al final ganó el caso o no, el hecho es que se descontinuó la producción de los LPs (aunque me parece que “se les olvidó” destruir los existentes, pues aún es relativamente fácil conseguirlos). El legendario Giorgio GOMELSKY (famoso por ser gerente/productor de bandas como THE YARDBIRDS, T-BONES, GONG!, MAGMA y SOFT MACHINE) estuvo involucrado en la producción de los dos álbumes. GOMELSKY, quien también produjo el álbum "666", conoció a VANGELIS durante la estadía en Francia de APHRODITE´S CHILD. Cuando la banda se desintegra, GOMELSKY pone a trabajar a VANGELIS con un grupo de músicos de sesión y comienzan una serie de grabaciones para preparar material para uno o más álbumes. El proyecto no resulta debido a varios problemas económicos y las grabaciones inconclusas quedan abandonadas en los estudios Marquee de Londres, para ser “re-descubiertas” en 1978, y publicadas por Charly Records con gran escándalo.
