USS Forrestal (Detail & Scale 36) By Bert Kinzey

This is the third volume in the Detail & Scale Series written about one of the U.S. Navy's aircraft carriers. Volume 29 covered the USS LEXINGTON, while volume 34 was on the USS AMERICA. This new title is about the USS FORRESTAL, a ship which is historically significant because she was the world's first super carrier. FORRES-TAL was the first aircraft carrier designed -and built after World War II, the first built with a canted or angled deck, and the first designed to operate jet aircraft. Her design was a considerable step forward over the previous MIDWAY and ESSEX classes, and this design has proved so successful that it has remained the basis for all U.S. carriers that have been constructed since FORRESTAL was launched on December 11, 1954.
