Using the Small Lathe by John Wilding

In this series of articles, originally published in "Clocks", I have tried to cater for the beginner who has taken delivery of a new lathe, and to give him some idea which directions his first steps should take. 1 also suggest some simple projects in order that he may familiarise himself with the working of the tool. The accent is on the lathe's use in clockmaking and repairing and covers the construction of several tools and devices neccessary in this work.

The lathe chosen is the TOYO 210 but the procedures would apply equally well on the Unimat 3 or any other of the modern small lathes having milling facilities The concluding chapters cover the use of the lathe in the overhaul of a 8-day longcase movement including making a new plate pillar, and the overhaul of a 30 hr. longcase movement requiring new centres for the chain drive pulleys.
