A jet fighter is many things. The pages which follow are about American jet fighters designed for the classic purpose of destroying an enemy's aircraft in combat. The man (or men) wedged into the cramped, metal-smelling cockpit of a warplane pushed by a fast-burning jet engine are charged with other duties - interdiction, attack, escort, close air support - but every fighter jock worth his salt knows that the be-all and end-all is to prevail over an enemy piloting an opposing warplane.
