Une histoire du Canada

A bien des égards, le Canada est un pays de limites, un paradoxe pour un territoire qui jouit d'un espace pratiquement illimité. La majeure partie de cet espace est inhabité et inhabitable. Le nord du pays est très vaste, mais la majorité de la population vit dans le sud, le long de la frontière américaine. L'éminent historien Robert Bothwell soutient que l'histoire du Canada va au-delà de l'aspect régional ou national. A certains égards, le Canada a plus de sens vu de l'extérieur. Le reste du monde a toujours considéré ce pays outre une terre d'expérimentation et d'avenir. Les colonies, les régions et les populations disparates qui ont formé le Canada venaient d'un monde plus vaste, et y étaient liées. Au départ, la survie du pays et, ultérieurement, sa prospérité dépendaient des liens avec le monde extérieur : les technologies qui faisaient avancer les bateaux à vapeur et les trains d'un océan et d'un continent à l'autre, les années qui se battaient pour l'Amérique du Nord, les fourrures, le blé et l'or, qui assuraient au Canada une place dans le système commercial mondial. A d'autres égards. le Canada est inhabituel. Pour réussir à vivre ensemble, ses habitants ont dû composer avec des croyances bien ancrées à l'égard de la religion et de la nationalité. Le compromis n'a pas été facile et l'élaboration d'un système tolérable de gouvernement et de politique a donné lieu à des affrontements pénibles entre les Français et les Anglais, l'Est et l'Ouest, les natifs du pays et les non-natifs. Pays difficile et aux prises avec des défis, le Canada a néanmoins réussi contre toute attente : au XXIe siècle. il demeure un havre de paix et de prospérité. Ouvrage érudit. bien qu'accessible et témoignant d'un don pour la narration, Une histoire du Canada brosse un riche portait d'un pays dynamique et complexe.
